‘I think we know we can do it.’ Takeaways from Ryan Day’s pre-Purdue press conference

Throughout the 2024 season, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has taken a more serious approach to his media availability. Day knows what is on the line this year, with the Buckeyes’ “natty or bust” approach, and wants to convey a message beyond his words.
Day continued his serious approach this week but was less on edge than in recent press conferences. This is likely due to the ease of pressure after the win at Penn State on Saturday. After losing to Oregon last month, the Scarlet and Gray, and Day in particular, have been under intense scrutiny because of the preseason expectations. Yet, a top-five win on the road has to elevate some of that pressure.
It could also be that the level of the opponent drops off over the next two weeks. While Day cautioned again his team looking past Purdue — something he is likely to do before next week’s game against Northwestern as well — the Boilermakers are 1-7 this season, with the lone win coming against Indiana State in Week 1.

Of course, Ohio State has to bring the same energy and intensity to this week’s game against Purdue. The Buckeyes can’t afford a letdown. But Day was able to crack a smile or two during Tuesday’s press conference as he discussed what he saw from the Penn State game and looked ahead to Purdue.
Let’s examine some of Day’s comments that stood out and consider what they mean for the Scarlet and Gray.
Right now, we’re going to stick with what we have. If Zen (Michalski) were to become available, then that would give us more options.”
It took a week longer than most fans would have liked, but the Buckeyes have found their new-look offensive line. After the injury to Josh Simmons against the Ducks and Zen Michalski against Nebraska, the Scarlet and Gray needed a new left tackle. The answer was a left guard.
