The Duke Blue Devils have bolstered their roster by securing the commitment of veteran guard Sion James, a move that significantly enhances their championship prospects. James, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard from Sugar Hill, Georgia, brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the team.

Prior to joining Duke, James had a distinguished four-year tenure at Tulane University, where he played in 114 games, starting 107. Over his collegiate career, he averaged 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. In his senior season, he elevated his performance, averaging 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, while shooting 51.4% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. Notably, he recorded six 20-point games during the 2023-24 season, including a standout 28-point, 10-rebound double-double against North Texas in the American Athletic Conference tournament.

James’ decision to transfer to Duke was influenced by his desire to compete at the highest level and pursue an NBA career. His leadership qualities were evident during his time at Tulane, where he served as the chair of the AAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and earned the AAC Sportsmanship Award twice. His commitment to community service was also recognized with the Freeman School of Business Dean’s Service Award and the Newcomb-Tulane College Student-Athlete Award.

At Duke, James has made an immediate impact. In his first two games, he contributed double-digit scoring off the bench. He achieved a game-high +44 in a victory over Army West Point and recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds against Virginia Tech. His versatility was further demonstrated with a season-high eight assists at SMU and three blocked shots against Miami.

James’ addition to the Blue Devils’ lineup provides a seasoned and dynamic presence, enhancing their depth and competitiveness as they aim for a national championship.
