The news has sent waves of excitement through the Hoosier faithful, as the former player-turned-coach returns to the program where he solidified his legacy as one of the greatest players in Indiana’s storied basketball history.

Cheaney, who was a star for the Hoosiers in the early 1990s, was a key figure in Indiana’s success under head coach Bob Knight. The Indiana native’s illustrious playing career includes becoming the all-time leading scorer in Big Ten Conference history and winning the prestigious Naismith College Player of the Year award in 1993. His time on the court left an indelible mark on the program and the state, making him a beloved figure in Hoosiers basketball lore.

After an impressive playing career that saw him be selected as the sixth overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets (now Wizards), Cheaney went on to enjoy a successful professional career in the NBA. Damon Stoudamire Sends Strong Message to Duke After Unfortunate Cooper Flagg Injury.

There is some concern about the health and status of Duke Blue Devils star freshman Cooper Flagg after the 2024-25 ACC Player of the Year suffered an injury in the first half of Thursday’s ACC Tournament game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Flagg hurt his left ankle after getting a rebound, forcing him to miss the rest of the contest. Despite Flagg’s injury, Duke overcame a five-point halftime deficit by outscoring Georgia Tech in the second half by 13 points to pull off a 78-70 victory.

The No. 1 seed Duke has a short turnaround before its next game, as the Blue Devils are scheduled to face No. 5 seed and fierce rivals North Carolina Tar Heels this Friday evening at Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

With or without Flagg for Duke, Georgia Tech head coach and former NBA Rookie of the Year Damon Stoudamire seemingly believes that the Blue Devils are still talented and deep enough to continue having success, per Kevin Holden of CBS 17.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said following the Georgia Tech game that it’s a “real long shot” for Flagg to play against the Tar Heels in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

The likes of Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor and Sion James can expect higher usages in the absence of Flagg, who left the Yellow Jacket game with just two points, four rebounds, two steals and a block in 15 minutes.

Duke makes decision on Cooper Flagg injury for ACC championship game…

Duke can win its ACC record 23rd men’s basketball conference championship on Saturday night.

The news isn’t all good for the top-seeded Blue Devils ahead of their clash with Louisville, though.

Duke will be without freshman phenom Cooper Flagg once again.

Flagg, who sprained his left ankle in a quarterfinal game against Georgia Tech, didn’t play in Duke’s semifinal win over North Carolina on Friday.

Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer confirmed Flagg’s status for the final after Friday’s game.

“As far as Cooper goes, he’s doing better,” Scheyer told reporters. “Sprained ankle, all the imaging came back negative. He sprained it pretty good, though. It’s a good sprain. I’m not breaking any news. He’s not going to play tomorrow. He can’t play.”

There is something a tad foreboding about those final words, “He can’t play.”

Duke will surely be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament with a win Saturday, and will still be seeded highly even with a loss.

Flagg’s status could impact the mind of a tournament seeder or two, but more relevant than what seed Duke gets is whether he is on the court when the dance starts.

“Our goal is to have him ready for the tournament,” Scheyer said. “But we need to see how this weekend goes with the swelling and what he can do.”

Flagg wore a sweatsuit during Duke’s rivalry clash on Friday, and he walked on his own without any weight-bearing support.

Report: Indiana has two top candidates for next men’s basketball coach…

Indiana has two top candidates for its soon-to-be vacant men’s basketball coaching position, according to reporting from WDRB’s Rick Bozich: Clemson’s Brad Brownell and Drake’s Ben McCollum.

Brownell is the No. 1 option while McCollum is the No. 2, Bozich reports.

Brownell is in his 15th season as the head coach at Clemson, having led the Tigers to the Elite Eight last season. Last year was also Brownell’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance with the Tigers during his time in South Carolina.

His previous head coaching experience includes Wright State and UNC Wilmington. He’s been a Division-I head coach since 2003, his first with the latter program. Brownell is originally from Evansville, Indiana, and played college basketball in the state at DePauw.

McCollum is in his first year as a head coach at the Divison-I level with Drake after having spent a long and successful career in the Division-II ranks at Northwest Missouri State. He was linked to the job in reporting from Jeff Goodman on Thursday.

His Bulldogs are 30-3 on the season and have earned an NCAA Tournament berth after a win in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Everything UK basketball coach Mark Pope said after Kentucky exited the SEC Tournament…

Kentucky basketball is out of the SEC Tournament.

The Wildcats exited the 2025 edition of the conference tournament at the quarterfinal stage: 6 seed UK was thrashed by 3 seed Alabama 99-70 on Friday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

The 29-point result was the largest margin of victory by Alabama over Kentucky in series history, and it gave the Crimson Tide a third straight win over the Wildcats for the first time. All three of these wins by Alabama over Kentucky came this season.

After Kentucky’s 99-70 loss to Alabama in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, head coach Mark Pope addressed the team’s performance and injuries affecting their play.

Pope credited Alabama for their aggressive play and fast pace, acknowledging their strong performance. He expressed disappointment in Kentucky’s response, noting the team was stagnant and didn’t play to their usual standards.

Pope provided an update on point guard Lamont Butler, who exited the previous game due to a shoulder injury. He stated that Butler’s imaging results were positive, and the team is hopeful he’ll return for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during the SEC Tournament, Pope emphasized the importance of resilience. He acknowledged that the team’s journey could either be “tear[ing] you to shreds or… mak[ing] you better,” and stressed the need for fortitude and togetherness as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament.
