Alaina Coates, a former standout for the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, has returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach and player development advisor. Her decision to rejoin the program stems from two personal reasons: a desire to give back to the community that supported her and to prepare for life after her playing career.
A Storied Career at South Carolina
Coates’ journey with the Gamecocks began in 2013 when she signed with the team under head coach Dawn Staley. A 6-foot-4 center from Irmo, South Carolina, Coates quickly made her mark, becoming a four-time All-SEC selection and a key contributor to the team’s success. She was instrumental in leading South Carolina to its first national championship in 2017, though she missed the NCAA Tournament run due to an ankle injury sustained on senior night.
Transitioning to Coaching
After her collegiate career, Coates was selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. She has since played for several WNBA teams, including the Minnesota Lynx, Atlanta Dream, and Indiana Fever, and has also spent time playing overseas.
In addition to her professional playing career, Coates has been involved in coaching at the grassroots level. This past winter, she served as an assistant coach for the Dutch Fork High School girls’ basketball team, her high school alma mater. Her role included being a practice player, offering on-court guidance, and providing mentorship to the players. Coates expressed that this experience sparked a passion for coaching and affirmed her interest in pursuing it further.
Giving Back Through the FAAM Foundation
Beyond her athletic endeavors, Coates is dedicated to community service through her nonprofit organization, the Alaina Coates FAAM Foundation. The foundation focuses on youth development and family support, organizing initiatives such as book drives and building miniature libraries for local organizations like the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia. Coates’ commitment to service was recognized during her time at South Carolina when she was selected for the SEC Community Service Team.
