MINNEAPOLIS — The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a federal investigation into Minnesota’s hiring practices, citing potential violations of federal employment law. The move marks the latest flashpoint in an ongoing political and legal standoff between the Trump-aligned federal government and Democratic Governor Tim Walz.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the investigation focuses on whether Minnesota’s public sector hiring policies—including diversity initiatives and preference programs—may have discriminated against applicants based on race or national origin. Officials from the Trump administration argue that such practices potentially violate the Civil Rights Act and merit further scrutiny.

Governor Walz responded forcefully, defending the state’s approach as a “necessary and constitutional commitment to equity and inclusion.” In a statement released Thursday, Walz said:
